A set-up similar to the one described for nitrogen oxides can be used by reversing the roles of 0 3 and NO or by replacing nitrogen oxide with an olefin. Alternatively, a highly sensitive and specific procedure can be realized by making use of the chemiluminescent reaction between ozone and rhodamine B. A disc coated with this dye and gallic acid in the presence of ozone yields a luminescence detected by a phototube and the current generated is directly related to the mass of ozone per unit time flowing over the dye.

LENIHAN Department of Clinical Physics, University of Glasgow, Scotland ABSTRACT Activation analysis, the first technique to allow the detection and accurate estimation of many trace elements in the human body, has been widely used in trace element studies, but important problems remain to be tackled before the biochemistry and physiology of the minor elements is adequately underĀ stood.
