Our young man is certainly correct. But there are other desires that he is satisfying right then. He is probably in a nice and quiet room, in a comfortable temperature and position, in an armchair, say, or at a desk, perhaps also walking up and down as he looks at the formula, talking aloud or to himself, maybe, writing or drawing it in his mind or on a piece of paper.

T h e fact that they are painters, public speakers, etc. does not tell us which. e. the ease with which they learn about or cathect conditions under which they satisfy the desires in question —and if we could take a look at their work, we may be able to get a first idea. A painter who has almost no people in his compositions and is painstakingly meticulous and slow in his work is likely, other things being equal, to have had to give up more than a colleague who prefers to have people in his compositions and works elegantly and fast.

However, these identifications, too, may be passing affairs, although even a passing identification with a team that has lost may give us trouble for some time after. Not all identifications of later life are necessarily of that nature. A person who enters an apprenticeship for many years with a painter of his choice, with a great mathematician, or even with a master watch-maker, is likely to adopt many of that person's desires, so many in fact that we might say he takes much of the entire person into himself.
