Computers are hundreds or thousands of miles apart. Some (an increasing number) of the connections are by satellite, which gives quite significant transmission delays. All these factors (plus the fact that this was not the purpose of the ARPANET) mean that a single program is never run on several of the computers at the same time, all processors working in parallel, in order to speed up execution (see Fig. 10). Instead they are directly cast in silicon, the computer architecture actually embodying the isomorphic process —structure graph of the program. It seems potentially extremely fruitful to describe a multicomputer as a network of processors that transform information flowing through them. We can then compare different architectures by asking how each executes particular benchmark problems, or sets or mixes of problems. We can further use these results to point to bottlenecks and underused channels and nodes to help us restructure our architectures in attempts to improve upon them.
PEPE has three controllers, one for each type of processor. PEs have their own local memories, and they share a large associative memory. They communicate only serially through the controller. This means PEs form an unstructured "ensemble" rather than an array. This independence gives flexibility in grouping and ordering processors. When processors fail, the system can keep working, and new processors can easily be added. For the applications considered interaction was not needed. PEPE, like the ILLIAC IV, is an extremely expensive supercomputer.
